The container transport industry in South Africa handles over 2 million containers per annum, most of which move within a 20km zone around the Durban, Cape Town, and PE/Coega ports. The industry is characterized by many small-scale transport companies servicing a much smaller number of large customers.
The scale mismatch between supply and demand has given rise to transport brokerage firms who contract with a multitude of transporters to meet demand. A transporter is often connected to the end-customer through multiple transport brokerage firms, each adding margin and cost to the supply chain.
